History of Viagra

Viagra (Sildenafil Citrate) is the first medication used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction ever to be approved by FDA. Shortly after its introduction to the market in 1998, it became #1 aid for men suffering from erection disorders and looking for something to help them power up their libido. Even though several other meds (Cialis, Levitra) managed to get FDA approval several years later, Viagra still remains unrivaled when it comes to the total number of sales and the total number of satisfied customers.

How does it work?

In order to get a normal healthy erection, you need to have enough of a substance called cGMP (cyclic guanosine monophosphate) in the body of your penis. This substance binds with nitric oxide causing penile muscles to relax. This, in its turn, allows more blood to enter the penis and gives you an erection. When you are suffering from erectile dysfunction, you have increased levels of PDE5 enzyme in your body. This enzyme disintegrates cGMP and prevents you from getting erections the way you are used to. Viagra inhibits PDE5 and keeps the level of cGMP in your system high restoring your normal sexual function.

How to take Viagra?

Take Viagra 30 to 120 minutes prior to expected sexual activity. Wash it down with a big glass of water. Avoid drinking grapefruit juice or eating grapefruit when taking Viagra – these two may interact causing the amount of Sildenafil in your bloodstream to increase, which is very likely to cause side effects. On the contrary, alcohol and fatty foods may weaken the effect of Viagra making it impossible for you to obtain an erection, so avoid drinking and having fatty meals when taking Viagra. You are recommended to start with 50mg of Sildenafil but the dosage may be either increased to 100mg or decreased to 25mg according to the way your body responds to the intake of the medicine. You are not advised to take more than 100mg of Sildenafil within 24 hours under any circumstances.

Can something go wrong when I’m taking Viagra?

Unfortunately, Viagra is a medication known to cause quite a few side effects, some of them quite serious. What is encouraging, however, is the fact that most people suffer from only the least serious side effects of Sildenafil, which include flushing, nasal congestion, minor vision and metabolism impairments. Severe side effects are observed in extremely rare cases and may include heart attack or stroke, sudden hearing loss, priapism and arrhythmia. If you experience any symptoms of the latter after taking Viagra, seek emergency medical assistance immediately.
